QUALITY vendor-bred steers sold to very strong demand, which saw prices for lighter weight steers remain firm at the Leongatha store sale yesterday (July 10).
However, other steers eased slightly, but considering the very plain yarding, prices were acceptable.
Heavy rain over the drawing areas of Gippsland kept numbers to a minimum, and most of the yarding was in plain store condition.
Some producers believe that spring could be early this year, and sought cattle to combat strong spring growth. Some other producers have recently sold bullocks at good rates, and picked the eyes out of the steer portion.
Few lines of heavier steers were offered, but some of the usual buyers were not in attendance, and prices were mostly unchanged.
G&K Davis, Leongatha, sold 15 Angus yearling steers (475 kilograms liveweight), for $850, which was the top of the sale.
N&I Kemsley, Boolarra, sold seven Hereford steers for $765.
Light conditioned steers dominated the sale, which included a number of yearlings.
Prices for these better bred steers ranged from $630-$732.
Gaph Pastoral, Dollar, offered 24 Angus steers of varying age with a single yearling steer topping the sale at $875.
The balance sold to $732 to average $681.
