THERE was a feeling of spring in the air at the Wodonga store cattle today, when a mixed quality yarding of 2000 head sold to keen demand following one of the best autumn breaks in many years.
A good field of local backgrounder and grass finishers were keen for numbers, with the prospects of the winter slaughter market appearing sound.
The keenest inquiry was shown for the larger and well-bred lines of steers and heifers to grow and finish.
The better end of the weaner steers made $2-$2.25/kg,
while the heavier grown steers topped at $955, as most realised 165-180c/kg for the four-tooth and older pens
and 190-208c/kg for the younger milk and two-tooth lots.
Top steer price went to I&H O'Keefe with a pen of 15 Angus 458kg sold to Ladysmith Feedlot, Wagga Wagga, NSW.
Best of the weaner yarding was sold by Alan and Kathy Hannaford, Braidwood, NSW, with 28 Angus, 358kg at $800.
These were part of a 300-head draft from the Hannafords that were consigned to Wodonga through the Ray White network.
A number of large and smaller lines of weaner cattle sold well between $650-$750, while the lighter drafts saw very few pens sold under $500.
The heifer market was also strong, with grass finishers rather than restockers, making a play.
Most lines of heifers were sold between 180-195c/kg, with the Hannaford family's heifers selling to $668.
