THE western weaner sales topped-off the season with solid prices at the Warrnambool combined agents sale today, selling to 211cents per kilogram, with the European cattle proving hot property.
Outside demand from Gippsland, Hells Gate, livestock buyer Mick Kemp and Westside Meats lifted the day’s prices with the extreme hot weather deterring some local support.
Angus steers, weighing 340-410kg sold from 165c/kg and topped at 189c/kg, with majority of the pens making mid-180c/kg.
The top price paid for Angus steers was for 36 EU accredited steers, weighing 333kg, 10 month-old, Rossander bloodlines that sold to 189c/kg, or $629.
Hereford steers sold to 190c/kg while a good run of Charolais steers topped at 211c/kg, for 15 steers, weighing 309kg from Deep Creek that was bought by Alex Scott and Co, Gippsland.
“The sale is one of the later sales in the Western District because of the later calving pattern and season which did help us out,” J&J Kelly auctioneer Jack Kelly said.
“The prices were just a bit better than expected with the good competition, especially with calves 360kg and above.”
In the open auction, most of the lighter calves were making $550 to $600, which was good going according to the agents.
Several feedlot buyers regarded the quality of the 1916 yarding as some of the best seen, with the later western sale allowing more recovery from the tough autumn last year.
