HAMILTON independent agents’ inaugural European-breeds crossbred sale was a resounding success on Tuesday, as selling reconvened in the western weaner series in 40-plus degree temperatures.
Offering a yarding of 1850 head to a large and eager field of grass and grain finishers, prices for steers rose steadily to top at 198c/kg lwt while heifers traded solidly between 150-165c/kg lwt.
Entries of Charolais and Simmental-sired calves dominated the yarding and due to the abundant local season, plenty of weight was on offer with few pens yarded weighing less than 300kg.
The heaviest among the penning, weighing 360-410kg realized $650 to $759 a head and averaged 186.5c/kg lwt while lighter steers 280-360kg made $505-$690 and averaged 185c/kg lwt.
The market top of $799 a head was paid to the McMeel family, Hillcrest, for the opening yard of the sale 18 Charolais weighing 449kg while highest dollar Simmental-sired made $756 went to Malcolm and Sherri Robertson, The Highlands, for a pen of 30 Simmental-Hereford-Shorthorns weighing 398kg.
