WHILE the Wodonga sale today is traditionally a feature female sale, the extreme temperatures have forced some producers to send in yearlings and younger steers and heifers for sale.
This increased the numbers that were sold, and buyers were selective in what they wanted to buy, picking a few lines of notable cows and calves, and joined heifers.
Braveheart Angus, Gapsted, sold 24 TeMania-blood second-calf cows with Alpine Angus calves at-foot, and re-joined November 5. A pen of 15 sold for the top price of $1020, with the balance $970.
Included in this section, and amply supported in the other sections of the sale, were northern bred cattle that had been on agistment in the Riverina for 2-3 months.
Agents said that these cattle could not return to the north as there was no feed, a little water to sustain an outcome.
These plainer condition cows and calves sold from $600-$800, and the best of the other Victorian outfits sold to $750.
WG&PM Connley, Benambra sold 33 Hereford heifers with young CAF, by Karoonda and Nunniong bulls for $750.
Other cows and calves originated from Merriwa, on the Queensland border, Gunnedah, Ivanhoe and Collarenbri.
The 156 Santa Gertrudis cows with TeMania CAF from Brenda Station, Merriwa sold to $710, av $647.
Repeat buyers factored into the good sale of district-bred females, PTIC to calve over months ranging between February to August.
John Payne, Rosewhite, purchased the top pen of Angus-Heifers of NK Nichol & Co Pty Ltd, Coonamurra, Bethanga for $1240.
Tim and Jessica Scott, Table Top Angus, sold seven Angus heifers PTIC for Feb-Mar calving for $1000.
