HEAVIER cattle sold to solid demand at the Warrnambool winter store sale last Friday, where 1885 were yarded - well above the 1500 advertised.
Heavy steers and unjoined heifers were the pens most keenly chased by feedlot buyers, with Warrnambool Stock Agents Association secretary Gerald Madden reporting the sale of heavy steers 6-8 cents per kilogram up on the May sale.
Grown Steers sold to $970, weaner steers topped at $754, heavy heifers to $779 and young Charolais cows with calves at foot reached $1400.
Mr Madden reported heavy, grown steers 380-513kg sold from 189-199c/kg, with an isolated sale to 211c/kg, while lighter weight steers 300-370kg sold from 195-215c/kg, while fresh conditioned young steers under 300kg sold from 201-293c/kg.
Vendors R&A Fry sold the top lot of nine Angus steers, weighing 513kg, at 189c/kg, or $970, while Strathallan sold 15 Angus steers, weighing 489kg to 191c/kg, or $914.
Major buyers Jindalee, Hopkins River, Midfield Meats, livestock buyer Peter Touhey who purchased stock for western Victorian and South East South Australia agent and clients, and South West restockers.
Mr Madden reported open auction in the unweighed young steers section topped at $660 per head, however majority of the pens sold between $550-$645.
Heavy heifers ranged from 181-199c/kg, with the top price received for six Simmental-Limousin heifers, weighing 373kg or $743.
Mr Madden said young weaner age heifers were in large supply and sold at similar rate to range from 175-188c/kg.
Top priced paid for cows and calves was for 13 Charolais second calver cows with 13 autumn drop Charolais calves-at-foot and redepastured Charolais Bull sold by J Meyer to $1400 per head and were purchased by an East Gippsland restocker.
Other Cow & Calf Outfits were of light store condition and sold mainly from $600-$850/head.
