Monaro Livestock & Property (MLP) held their annual calf sale, Wednesday, April 1, but there was no April Fools. A high quality yarding, due to an excellent season, and the exceptional high plains breeding, sold to very strong competition.
This sale was well supported by feedlots and backgrounders who underpinned the sale. Yearling steers sold to $1030. All of the cattle displayed solid muscle shape and condition as most of the yarding was not weaned. At times prices were adjusted accordingly, but many sales, especially the youngest steers, sold very well.
Most of the steers, 320-385 kilograms liveweight, made from $760-$930 with an estimated liveweight price of 220-250c/kg. Because of the snow and very cold temperatures on the high plains, many of the calves sold are only 5-7 months old. The steer portion of these sold very well selling mostly from $480-$660, or from 260-300c/kg.
Heifers sold to solid competition, and prices were equal to recent high country sales. Many sold from $450-$680 with the highest price pen fetching $750. Liveweight prices varied between 190 & 235c/kg lwt.
