BUYERS from New South Wales and South Australia cleared about 75 per cent of the 2300-strong steer yarding from the Elders Casterton weaner sale today.
Bidding steadily on Hereford sales between 220-230 cents a kilogram liveweight, and up to 246c/kg lwt on Angus and Black baldies pens, the northern interstate inquiry trucked the bulk of its loads to Young, Holbrook and Glenn Inness while the SA support was focused mainly on the lower southeast corner.
Elders’ auctioneer Jody Darcy said the major feedlot competition offered in other Western District sales earlier in the week although not as active, was not overly missed.
He said that from the rail it appeared buyers enjoyed their duel which frequently kicked off at levels of 215-220c/kg lwt and jogged along freely for 8 and 10 cents at a time.
“There was three or four bidders competing for each pen," he said which made selling a breeze and enjoyable."
The market’s best sale was a yard of 14 Charolais-cross, weighing 374kg, that returned $837 a head for Shannon Matheson, Stonehaven while the best priced Hereford yard weighing 362kg, realised $810.90, for Greg and Susan Storer, Dunorer, Hot Spur.
Angus sales peaked at $810.40 for LM Kerr & Co, West Bridge, Casterton.
