SOUTH Gippsland support had a significant influence on the outcome of the Casterton weaner steer sale today, where they purchased about a quarter of the 2200-head yarding.
The sale peak of 191 cents per kilogram was achieved by local vendor Noss, with 60 Pathfinder-blood Angus steers.
The EU accredited pen averaged 371kg and drew competition from interstate buyers from Millicent and Naracoorte, as well as Melbourne and volume buyer Terry Ginnane, Landmark, Leongatha.
Feedlot support, mainly from Thomas Foods International and Hopkins River Beef, improved the sale which was on par with this week’s Western District prices and saw heavier steers selling between 170 to 191c/kg.
The best-quality Herefords were being chased by King Island based Casterton supporter Ian Lester who purchased five pens to the sale high of 185c/kg, and averaged 176c/kg.
Most Herefords sold between 165-175c/kg.
The middle run of lighter calves were a shade dearer than some sales ealier in the week, selling from 175-185c/kg, which was a pleasing result according to Landmark selling agent Greg Bright.
“It has been a tough year north of us so we’re pretty happy with the outcome,” Mr Bright said.
