A BIG crowd gathered for the annual Bombala, NSW, calf sale last week, where a small amount of South Gippsland competition competed with feedlot buyers and local producers to secure quality bred steers and heifers.
The yarding consisted of almost even numbers of autumn and spring 2014-drop steers and heifers, which, after a good season, were in quite good condition.
Competition was solid without being over the top and prices were good.
RJ&KE Letts sold 40 Angus steers from $685-$845 to average $777, with the cattle being secured for grain feeding, steer fattening from South Gippsland and local fatteners. Mountain Springs Partnership sold 36 Angus steers from $680-$795, and A&C Gillespie-Jones, 24 autumn-drop Angus steers from $785-$800.
Ages of the steers varied from 6-12 months, and the demand for the younger and lighter weight steers was very solid.
GD&JJ Platts sold 30 Angus steers, Sparta-blood, from $675-$710, and Reed Pastoral Co, 53 Angus-Hereford and Hereford steers from $515-$775, av $663.
One of the larger local district vendors was Davy Cattle Co, Delegate, offered 115 Angus steers, selling between $600 and $725.
All of these sales were deemed to equal those of the recent Monaro High Plains sales.
A poor season in South Australia saw Kangaringa Pastoral Co send cattle to the Monaro in January on agistment. These cattle were sold at Bombala, with the 165 Hereford steers sold mostly to a feedlot buyer from $565-$730, av $651. These steers were ripe for grain feeding being of good frame and ready to jump ahead.
There was a good size yarding of more than 600 heifers penned, and with good competition for heifers to feed or background for later feeding, nearly all sold between $500-$705.
RJ&KE Letts sold 22 Angus heifers from $605-$705, and the Davy Cattle Co, 136 Angus heifers from $560-$600.
The Kangaringa Past Co, South Australia, offered a large number of 290 Hereford and Angus-Hereford heifers, which sold from $460-$625, av $571.
Overall, the local producers were very happy with their results.
