PRICES held steady at Bairnsdale's store cattle sale today, even though there were many plainer cattle among the yarding.
There were few grown steers in today's market, with a pen of Herefords from John Nicholls of Sarsfield selling for $752/head.
I&M Biran sent in five 18-month-old Angus steers, that sold to $720.
There were a lot of weaner steers sent in to the sale.
Merrill Reed, of Melrose Herefords in Cann River, sold a pen of 16 Hereford steers, 9-11-months-old, 370-400kg, for $745/head.
Ms Reed said she was testing the waters and was happy with the price, hoping for $750 each.
J Craddock sold a line of mixed Simmental crossed Hereford and black baldy weaner steers, to a top of $660.
T&A Bastin sold Angus weaners to a top of $635.
Mick Whelan of Waiwera sent in seven pens of weaner steers, 9-10-months-old - Charolais and Limousin crosses - that sold to $594.
He also sold heifers, to a top of $445.
Among the grown heifers, PJ&OD Pedersen put up a 12 Hereford heifers, estimated about six weeks from joining, that sold to $580.
A pen of excellent Friesian heifers, rising two-year-olds, to calve from July 20, were sent in by Ginger Johnston of Orbost and bought by dairyfarmer Peter Jennings of Bruthen, paying $970.
JCJ&LM White sent in nine Angus cow and calf units, second calvers, not rejoined, that sold to $930.
Apart from these two pens, cows and cow and calf units did poorly - however, some were in very average condition.
