ANGUS heifers met with strong competition and sold to 250 cents a kilogram liveweight at the Hamilton Independent Agents British-breed weaner sale yesterday.
But Hereford cattle were generally of lighter condition and did not meet as strong demand allowing bidders to snapped up most of the white-faced heifers at 210c/kg or less.
There were 3200 cattle yarded at the sale, almost double the number offered the same time last year.
The sale started at a cracking pace, with 19 Angus heifers, offered by Phil Oldham, Muntham, Casterton, and weighing 360kg, drawing an opening bid of 220c/kg. The pen went on to make the second highest price of 249c/kg.
The top price went to the Peach family, Comly Banks, Byaduk, who sold 40 Toora West-blood Angus heifers weighing 355kg at 250c/kg.
This year’s top price was almost 60c/kg higher than the highest bid on Angus at last year’s sale.
n comparison, the top price for Hereford heifers at this year’s sale was only 10c/kg dearer than the same time last year.
The majority of the other Angus heifer sales ranged in price from 210-225c/kg lwt to return breeders $600-$806 a head.
Best lines of Hereford heifers, 280-360kg, made 194-215c/kg lwt for returns of $545-$705 a head.
