NEGOTIATIONS began today for a new regional saleyards in the Corangamite Shire.
The Corangamite Shire Council confirmed it had received an offer from Regional Infrastructure Pty Ltd (RIPL) to begin discussions regarding the operations of the Camperdown Saleyards, as a new Regional Livestock Selling Facility is constructed in the shire.
As soon as the new facility is completed, the Camperdown saleyards is expected to be closed down.
Corangamite Mayor, Chris O’Connor said no final decision had been made regarding Camperdown’s future operations and the negotiations were at a preliminary stage.
The Council supports a regional facility, saying that it would offer benefits including the ability to maximise buyer attendance and maintain the auction system as a viable alternative for producers to market their cattle.
The Corangamite regional saleyards annoucement comes as Ballarat stock agents this week revealed their concerns about the progress of a new saleyards for the town, which has been stalled for about five years.
RIPL have now been given a three-month deadline to submit a planning permit for the new facility.
