THE pick for the supreme champion Shorthorn exhibit at the Royal Melbourne Show was one of the hardest decisions for the judge today.
Judge Peter Sykes, Mawarra Herefords, Longford, said the grand champion female and bull were both exceptional animals, but he decided to go with the 11-month-old heifer, Tarraganda TG Georgina K1, exhibited by David and Marion Spencer, of Spencer Family Shorthorns, Yuroke.
"Both animals have so much to offer the breed," Mr Sykes said.
"But I am going with the heifer, because she's got that muscle and softness, and beautiful udder placement."
Stud principal David Spencer was thrilled with the win, and said he'd only purchased Tarraganda TG Georgina K1 at the breed's national show and sale at Dubbo, NSW, in June, for about $4000.
She beat the junior and grand champion bull on the day, Eloora Emerald K21, exhibited by Eloora Shorthorns, Mooralla.
Mr Sykes praised Eloora Shorthorn's young bull for his muscle and top line.
"There's a lot to admire about him…he's an industry-driven type of bull and he's got great carcase attributes," he said.
