A NEW app has been launched that will help consumers to better understand the various cuts of meat, particularly highlighting that the most expensive is not always about quality.
Vic's Premium Quality Meat butcher Anthony Puharich developed the Ask the Butcher App with his father, to give users easy access to a butcher's knowledge.
When he was growing up, Mr Puharich spent countless hours with his father learning how to work with, cook and respect all varieties of meat.
"I've been a butcher for half of my life and I can't wait to share what I've learnt about meat and meat preparation," he said.
"The Ask the Butcher App is an easy-to-use tool that will help take the guess work out of buying and cooking fantastic meat and make the experience all the more enjoyable.
"It's not always about buying the most expensive cut, but knowing how to get the best results out of a range of cuts."
App features detailed information on each cut of beef, veal, pork, lamb and chicken in Suggest a Cut or The Meat Rack.
It also has preparation suggestions and butcher's recipes, a cooking timer based on meat and weight selected, and gives the opportunity to ask questions via email.
There will also be regular updates in the future including recipes by renowned Australian chefs and the option for consumers to share their meat success stories via social media.
Wangaratta butcher Dan Wallace says Apps and social media are an easy way to value-add to a butcher business.
He has created his own Facebook page for his butcher shop Your Everyday Gourmet.
"We've got over 1200 likes for our Facebook page, which we've been running for the past two years," he said.
"On average we are selling $5000 worth of produce through the Facebook page. It has really allowed us to reach a wide variety of people."
Mr Wallace said he created the Facebook page as it was free and a cheaper advertising alternative.
