A FIRE has sparked out of control across farm land south-west of Werribee, prompting the CFA to issue a "watch and act" alert to residents.
The blaze ignited on Bulban Road near Little River about 3.30pm on Monday and is heading in a north-westerly direction.
CFA spokesman Gerard Scholten said the fire is not threatening any homes at this stage, but that could change later this evening if firefighters are unable to control the blaze.
The fire is charging towards the communities of Exford, Balliang East, Mount Cottrell, Parwan, Eynesbury, Mambourin, Quandong, Melton South.
Mr Scholten said the blaze was spotting, or sparking smaller fires, about two to three kilometres ahead of the main fire, making it difficult to contain for firefighters.
About 30 CFA crews, including three aircraft, are attempting to control the fire, which has burnt about 100 hectares.
Mr Schoelten said smoke from the fire had blanketed much of the area between Melbourne and Geelong, including the Princes Freeway, and urged people not to phone 000 unless they see flames.
"We ask motorists to drive carefully and not be distracted by the smoke," Mr Scholten said.
A V/line spokesman said trains were continuing to run between Melbourne and Geelong.
The CFA has sent a "advice" alert to the communities and towns of Bacchus Marsh, Long Forest, Darley, Kurunjang, Melton, Melton West, Hopetoun Park, Maddingley, Merrimu, Brookfield.
Mr Sholten said that message was to let people know that although they are not in the path of the fire they should monitor the CFA website and radio in case their are any changes.
"The wind may change for instance," he said.
