RANGAN Charolais offered more bulls than ever at its annual bull sale last week, and achieved a full clearance of the 40 on offer, averaging $5240.
The two top-price bulls both went to seedstock producers, with Lot 20 hitting $10,500 and Lot 15 following at $9000. Lot 20, Rangan Ledger J142 was purchased by Michael and Jess Turra of Dimontee Charolais, Nungurner with figures putting him in the breed top 10 per cent for low birth weight and top 10 per cent for 400 day weight.
Mr Turra said that he picked Lot 20, a LT Ledger 0332 son, as an outcross sire for his herd, "Ledger is a smaller type, so we get to keep the EBVs and carcase but bring it down a bit."
"He's got all the figures and will blend into the herd well," Mr Turra said.
Mr Turra also purchased Lot 19, Rangan Ledger J139, a full brother to Lot 20, for $5500, "He is a bit softer, and will go over the French cows," Mr Turra said.
The second top-price was $9000 for Lot 15, Rangan Doc Silver J79 purchased by Frank and Andis Sorraghan, Rockwood Charolais, Wagga Wagga NSW.
Mr Sorrgahan had arrived at Rangan's sale with only one bull in mind, "I've been searching from Queensland to Victoria for a bull, and this one was it," Mr Sorrgahan said.
Lot 15 is a son of NWMSU Doc Silver 362 PLD and out of Rangan Park Aletta E20.
"He has the cow family backing, the sire line is complementary and he had all the right credentials," Mr Sorrghan said. "And the reputation of this breeder is worth squillions."
There was an even split of new and returning buyers, with volume buyers including Doogallook, Yea, purchasing four bulls averaging $5375 and Mansa Holdings, Casterton also purchasing four bulls averaging $5250.
Rangan Charolais stud principal, Graeme Cook, said that he was "truly humbled" by the results, "It gives us confidence to keep investing in our program," Mr Cook said.
