BANEMORE Herefords held its 34th annual sale, on property at Penshurst last Thursday and sold 23 bulls of the 31 offered to a top of $6500 and an average of $4086.
Nayook South, Mount Gambier, South Australia purchased the top-priced bull, Lot 1 for $6500.
Banemore Waterhouse J104 is by the Allendale Waterhouse sire and out of Banemore Last Day, who is a Pine Hill Erik daughter. J104 and tipped the scales at 835 kilograms with a scrotal circumference of 42 centimetres.
J104 has an impressive birth weight of +3.0. With +34 for 200 day weight, +56 for 400 day weight, +81 for 600 day weight and +0.6 for intramuscular fat.
It has 10 indexes that are 20 per cent or better than breed average. They are birth weight, 200 day, 400 day, 600 day, milk, scrotal, carcase weight, EMA, rib fat and IMF.
Nayook South purchased a total of four bulls on the day. Lots 1, 8, 12 and 16 to a top of $6500, av $4125. The operation also purchased another one after the sale.
"Banemore cattle are leaders in carcase. The doing ability of their calves are what we are after," David Jenkins, Nayook South, said.
According to Mr Jenkins, Nayook South is a repeat buyer at Banemore as their bulls are proven, he sticks with what he knows works.
Like Banemore, Nayook is making the change from Herefords to Poll Herefords as the operator finds there is a bigger demand for the calves the operation sells through the yards in Mount Gambier.
Mr Jenkin said he is pleased with the change to predominantly sell Poll Herefords bulls, as that is also the way that his clients are heading.
"Today's results show that people are buying for a purpose.
"We are satisfied with the sale. We are on a 'trip' with our breeding program," Mr Jenkin said.
This year those at Banemore were pleased that all their bulls offered were above the top 10pc for market suitability. Within the top 10pc for EMA (+4.4) and an average birth weight av of +3.2 represents the top 25pc for the breed.
Landmark auctioneer Andrew Sloan said: "It was a good, solid sale with no big top-prices, but the outcome showed a better average and clearance on last year's results.
"The bulls were well-presented and were the heaviest they have ever been at sale time".
