GIRGARRE brothers, Brendon and Pat Nicholson backed up their success at Melbourne this year, taking out three interbreed titles.
Although they did not achieve the trifecta of attaining three successive supreme champion cow exhibit broadribbons in a row (the pair previously won the 2012 and 2013 trophies), they did score the interbreed intermediate exhibit, reserve senior champion interbreed cow and best group of three cows.
In the intermediate breed judging, Darrin Grevitt, of Queensland, singled out the Nicholsons’ entry Jugiong Nellie 6650 as his winner in this section.
“She’s in fine form,” Mr Grevitt said.
“She’s so well put together and has an udder to die for.”
She then went onto win the interbreed gong over the six other dairy breed winners.
Brendon Nicholson said Nellie had previously been shown as a dry heifer at the Rochester Show and was successful.
“We’ll probably take her to International Dairy Week now,” he said.
The senior champion Jersey title was awarded to the Nicholsons’ seven-year-old cow Jugiong Petunia 5574.
“She’s been milking for 450 days, and she’s still doing really well,” Pat Nicholson said about the winning animal.
“We flushed her last year.”
Petunia had been previously shown at Melbourne in 2013, placing third in the six-year-old class.
She was also champion at the Shepparton Show and has been awarded best udder in her class three times at IDW.
In terms of production, the cow has proven herself – producing up to 10,000 litres in 305 days.
“She’ll be retired from showing now,” Pat said.
“This is her last hurrah.”
The junior champion Jersey heifer went to Jason Hayes’ exhibit, Hazel Vale Prime Maybelle.
