AN "outstanding", "structurally sound", three-year-old Red Angus cow with her first calf at-foot (CAF) has taken out the supreme champion beef exhibit at last weekend's Royal Geelong Show.
Judge Chris Davidson, Morgiana Beef Composites Australia, Freshwater Creek, also said BJ's Essence G4, exhibited by Ben Fraser, BJ's Stud Cattle, Drouin, was a "brilliant", "easy doing" cow that had a great udder, legs and feet.
She topped the 180 head of cattle exhibited across 11 breeds, which was up on last year's about 160 head entered, competition organiser Nyssa Kelly said.
Mr Fraser, who was unable to attend his most successful Geelong Show as he was a groomsman at a friend's wedding, was ecstatic when mum Karen Fraser called to tell him of the win.
BJ's Essence G4 was sired by Canadian bull Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P, via artificial insemination, which Mr Fraser himself performed. He said the broadribbon made his hard work worthwhile.
He said Essence G4 was due to calve again in December and he planned to continue breeding with her and sell some flushes.
Another Red Angus was named senior champion beef bull.In awarding the broadribbon to Jillangolo Herdsman exhibited by L&M Llewellyn & Co, Jillangolo Red Angus stud, Mr Sykes said the two-year-old sire had tremendous length and capacity, and the carcase traits required by the industry.
In the junior categories of the interbreed competition Mandayen Jill J2402, exhibited by Patrick Halloran, Bush Park Limousin stud, Kyneton, was awarded junior champion beef heifer and Savannah Jon Bon Jovi PJ015, exhibited by Vaughan Campagnolo, Savannah Simmentals and Simbrahs and VPC Cattle Services, Woodside, South Australia, won junior champion beef bull.
Mr Campagnolo, who also prepared many of the other exhibitors' cattle at Geelong, also took home reserve champion beef heifer with Savannah Dharma J10, who has a full embryo transfer sister to the junior champion beef bull. Both were sired by Lancaster E Type E74, which Mr Campagnolo used as a herd sire.
To complete his most successful Geelong Show to date, Mr Campagnolo also won reserve champion beef group of three.
He plans to collect semen from Savannah Jon Bon Jovi PJ015 and then put him into Beef Australia 2015, to be held in Rockhampton, Queensland, next May.
