THE first Red Angus feature show at the Geelong Royal Show has been heralded as a success by Colin Rex, Red Angus Society of Australia executive officer.
BJ's Essence G4 presented by Ben Fraser, BJ's Stud Cattle, Drouin, topped the competition that attracted 10 exhibitors from Victoria and South Australia.
Mr Rex congratulated the exhibitors and organisers for putting on a "tremendous" feature show that promoted what Red Angus could offer to the wider beef industry.
BJ's Essence G4 also went on to win the supreme champion beef exhibit.
In awarding her the supreme Red Angus exhibit, judge Peter Sykes, Mawarra Herefords, Longford, picked the animal that he thought would do most for the breed.
He said the winning three-year-old cow that had her first calf, a seven-month-old bull, at-foot was an outstanding example of the breed.
Mr Sykes highlighted her completeness, correctness, softness and capacity.
"I love this three-year-old cow that has an outstanding bull calf at-foot (CAF)," he said.
"The more I see her, the more I like her - look at her length and the lift through her neck."
Mr Fraser, who was unable to attend the show as he was a groomsman at a friend's wedding, thanked Erin Grylls for presenting the cow on his behalf.
BJ's Essence G4 was sired by Canadian bull Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P, via artificial insemination, and out of GK Red Essence C7 (ET) GK C07.
He said Essence G4 was in-calf and he planned to continue breeding with her and sell some flushes.
She beat the grand champion Red Angus bull Bolton Girls Fat Whisper Jack J7, exhibited by Aimee and Olivia Bolton, Congupna, to top the breed.
Mr Sykes said the top bull had "tremendous carcase traits" including adequate muscling, particularly in the hindquarter, and coverage.
"This 14-month-old bull has natural lift through his front end and as well as his impressive muscling and power, he glides around the ring."
Senior champion bull was won by Jillangolo Herdsman exhibited by L&M Llewellyn & Co, and Mr Sykes said the "powerful" bull had smoothness, length and a great set of feet and legs.
In awarding junior champion heifer to Claremont Red Jilleroo, exhibited by Jeff and Sue Boland, Mr Sykes spoke highly of her softness, capacity and "complete type".
