A SECOND round of water sales for the Circular Head (Tas) irrigation scheme is about to open.
Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd (TI) would open sales for the Duck Irrigation Scheme at Circular Head on Wednesday, June 17, chief executive Chris Oldfield said.
“Following extensive consultation with local irrigators, the scheme has been redesigned and now provides for 5000 ML of water captured and stored over winter from the Duck River in the proposed Mill Creek Dam,” Mr Oldfield said.
“It will be in the summer, by river flow and pipeline, to farming districts from Roger River south of the dam site, to Irishtown, Edith Creek, Forest and Montagu in the north.”
TI has already put on hold schemes for two other districts in the original Circular Head Irrigation Scheme, Harcus and Redpa.
Through the State Government, it has offered assistance to assess the viability of a private proposal for the far north-west.
“For the Duck, we are looking for water sales additional to those already purchased,” Mr Oldfield said.
“We need to see commitments to buy 4500 ML; if water sales meet that threshold, we will submit a business case to the government for approval.”
Sales for the second round close at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 8.
Should the threshold be met, TI would work with farmers to assess engineering requirements for the pipeline alignment and confirm outlet locations for farms before the last acceptance date of August 31.
